eCustoms – New Digital Rules at the Border

Since September 2025, Serbia has started implementing the eCustoms system, marking a key step in the full digitalization of customs procedures. This project is carried out in cooperation with the Customs Administration, the competent Ministry, and with the financial support of the European Union, with the goal of making all customs procedures faster, simpler, and more transparent.

What does eCustoms mean in practice?

  • all customs procedures are conducted electronically, without paperwork;
  • communication with customs is carried out through digital channels;
  • costs and waiting times at the border are reduced;
  • legal certainty and predictability for businesses are increased.

For the business community, the introduction of eCustoms represents a significant reduction in administrative burden, a lower risk of human error, and faster cross-border flows of goods and services. An especially important benefit is alignment with EU customs rules, paving the way for easier trade with partners in the European Union.

Why is this important?

The digitalization of customs procedures is not merely a technical modernization but also the establishment of standards that bring Serbia closer to EU membership. As the Customs Administration emphasized, without fully digitalized communication, Serbia cannot become a member of the European Union.

For companies engaged in international trade, the implementation of eCustoms requires adapting internal processes – from documentation and IT systems, to employee training and compliance with the new customs framework.
