As of May 22, 2025, Serbia has officially become a member of the SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) system – a unified payment area for euro transactions. With this step, the domestic economy enters European financial flows on equal footing with EU member states, free from the additional administrative or cost-related barriers that previously accompanied cross-border payments.
For businesses, this means simpler, faster, and more cost-effective payments to partners in the EU, along with increased trust from foreign companies operating with Serbia. SEPA brings standardized procedures, shorter transaction processing times, and significantly lower banking fees – which is particularly important for companies engaged in exports, imports, services, and e-commerce. For our clients, SEPA membership creates new opportunities to optimize operations: from more efficient liquidity management and quicker contract settlement to stronger negotiating positions with international partners.
The SEPA system has existed since 2008, when it was established by the institutions of the European Union and the European Central Bank with the goal of creating a single market without borders for euro payments. Its purpose is to allow individuals, companies, and institutions to send and receive euro payments under the same conditions, regardless of whether the transaction is domestic or cross-border.
SEPA was initially developed as a response to the need for a more efficient, secure, and transparent payment infrastructure within the EU, significantly contributing to the integration of the European financial market and reducing the costs of cross-border business transactions.
